So last night Phillip didn't sleep either. This has been going on for days. Thankfully he has been taking a nap during the day while he's at school - otherwise he'd be going all day on a couple hours of sleep. Hes not having issues GOING TO sleep, its staying asleep that seems to be the problem. I don't know what is going on. I hesitate to give him any medication to help him sleep (though we do have a prescription for some) because hes already on so many meds that cause drowsiness. I hate the thought of medicating him more than we already have too. Anyway I guess I'll try and get ahold of the dr tomorrow and see if they have any suggestions about what on earth might be going on-- he's not sleeping well even when he does sleep and that makes me worry that he's having seizures in his sleep. BUT lets not borrow trouble... We'll see what the dr says/thinks and I'll update as I know more.
This evening Phillip had speech therapy (in case you don't know- he has an AWESOME speech therapist who has laughed, cried and celebrated with us for the last year and a half). Anyway... he had therapy tonight which was a little unusual for him because we usually go on Tuesday afternoons - so I wasn't sure how he was going to do with the change. Well, he did FANTASTIC! I don't know if we've ever had a better session than we did tonight! We were working on BIG and LITTLE - and using a big toy barn and a little toy barn- as well as big toy animals and little toy animals. He did awesome! He spontaniously asked for the "BIG PIG" and made choices when asked - and then identified big and little with his picture choices when asked.
The big deal about saying "big pig" is that he almost never puts 2 words together on his own - and to use a descriptive word is something I don't think hes ever done. We were so tickled - we were hi-5'ing all around!
After we were finished with big and little - we moved on to colors. His speech therapist spread out 9 puzzle pieces with buckets of colored paint on them - so he could make choices. He would then choose the color he wanted and she would give him the coordinating paper scoop of ice cream and we would stick it on the wall on top of the paper ice cream cone that was hanging there. Before she gave him the 'scoop' though - he had to say and sign the color he chose and then say and sign "I- want- red" or whatever color he chose. He did so great! Usually when he can't have all of something (like all the scoops of ice cream) he has a fit and won't do the activity but tonight he just did exactly what he was supposed too. Once all 9 of the color scoops were in place on the cone- she pulled out the coordinating color words BUT she didn't show him the word: then she asked him "Phillip, where is the red ice cream?" (and then thru the other 8 colors) and EVERY time except for the pink - he chose the appropriate color scoop and then she gave him the word and he stuck it on the coordinating color scoop. I'm so proud!! I hope this description made sense - I'll post a picture and maybe that will help!
I hope that you all rejoice along with us when he makes even a seemingly tiny step... for Phillip - those steps are hard-won and unfortunatly can be wiped away with the next seizure. Just pray with us too - that this doesn't happen. That he continues to grow and learn and that he gets to keep all of his knowledge and build on it - just like we all should be able too! And I will be praying for all who read, rejoice, and pray too! Thank you!
God bless, Misty
